PARKROYAL on Pickering | Singapore

‘PARK ROYAL on Pickering was crafted to become Singapore’s first ever zero energy sky garden that is powered by solar energy cells’.

We were pretty excited to stay at the PARKROYAL on Pickering (click here). Pulling up to the hotel, the sheer size of the vertical sky garden and lush surrounding take your breath away. PARKROYAL on Pickering is located in the heart of Singapore at the gateway of the Central Business District, Hong Lim Park, and bustling Chinatown.

PARKROYAL on Pickering was designed by world renowned architects WOHA, The hotel’s entrance and ground floor’s design is an inverted inspiration from Balinese rice paddies. The hotel concept features over 15,000 square metres of vertical lush tropical gardens and waterfalls accumulating to twice it’s original land area.  You simply can get lost in this ‘hotel-in-a-garden’!

Check’n In:

On arrival, the PARKROYAL on Pickering’s mind-blowing architecture is transcended throughout. From the guest drop off, past the check-in foyer and into the restaurant. The soaring ceilings, buzzing ambiance, mind blowing architecture and friendly staff made for such a pleasant surprise.

We were fortunate to stay in the Orchid Club Deluxe room on the 13th floor. Which I highly recommended! Getting to our room, we needed to walk over the sky bridge, which was an fascinating in itself. The sheer magnitude of the ‘living wall’ vertical garden came to life while walking to our room. The hotel has four levels of “self shading’ cascading greenery, which helps to cool the building while also reducing the hotels energy consumption.

The Room:

Immediately entering our ‘Orchard Club Deluxe Room’, we were bathed in natural light thanks to the non tinted extra large windows. The view of Singapore’s skyline through the cantilevered sky garden was breathtaking.

The room was spacious, well equipped and with a semi private bathroom. Our room presented an earthy tone throughout using recycled wood for the floors and walls and recycled granite for the ‘infinity’ bathtub and wash basin. Following the approach of ‘green living’ the room was filled with bottles of filtered rain water and had a ‘rainwater harvesting’ rain shower.

Food & Beverage:

Being part of the Orchid club, we were able to go up to the Orchid club Lounge, located on the top level the lounge offers a 360° panoramic view of the city. It is a private and intimate setting for breakfast, meetings or evening cocktails and canapés. We had a champagne breakfast and evening cocktails/canapés here. The breakfast was designed to make you feel at home, with a ‘Martha Stewart’ style island bench. This was a great way to have a more relaxed breakfast away from the hustle and bustle.

We also ate at the resturant ‘LIME’ for breakfast and dinner, the buffet selection and quality of food here was very good. LIME is a vibrant restaurant with friendly chefs and staff offering a great range of local, Asian and international cuisine over 3 open kitchens/bays. Being the foodie I am, I had a great chat to a couple of the chefs, who were not only talented but clearly had a passion for food.

The also source all of their herbs and spices from their very own herb garden which they also had on the 5th floor.

Pool & Gym:

The wellness level on the 5th floor is an absolute green playground.  With yet again more stunning views of the city, This elevated open plan area exhibits a spectacular infinity pool and jacuzzi, a modern fitness centre that is very reasonable in size,a full 300 metre garden walk and an award winning spa.

Colourful ‘bird cage’ cabanas surround the pool which are designed to provide sanctuary within a sanctuary. Intimacy and relaxation in the heart of the Singapore’s hustle and bustle.

Practical Gym At The Parkroyal

Pros:

  • Sustainable and green
  • Beautiful views
  • Infinity pool and cabanas
  • Practical gym
  • Great comfy bed
  • Spacious room
  • Orchid Club facility
  • Friendly staff (in particular, one of the chefs I spoke to, took the time to tell me his story and about his training in Italy and love of good food)

Cons:

  • Lack of privacy in the suites, as these were situated on the wings of the hotel and with the non-tinted windows allowing maximum sunlight in also allowed maximum exposure from the levels above. *If your staying in these particular rooms make sure to have the blinds down when using the bathroom 🙂

Overall:

I highly recommend this self sustainable 5 star hotel-in-a-garden. It succeeded every expectation I had.
