“The timeless charm of the Peranakan era is showcased throughout the InterContinental Singapore, blending heritage inspired furnishings with modern day comfort” #InterContinentalLife

InterContinental Singapore (click here) is a luxurious hotel located amongst some of Singapore’s most historical iconic arts and cultural districts of Bugis and Bras Basah. Built into Bugis Junction, which also boasts over 200 retail and dining outlets, the InterContinental Singapore is spoilt for choice when it comes to convenience.

Perfectly Restored Pernaken Shops

Pulling up to the InterContinental Singapore, the hotels’ design immediately grabbed my attention. The InterContinental pays homage to the distinctive character of the vibrant precinct and preserves the iconic style of shop houses from the 1920’s, which is clearly recognizable in the hotel’s facade.

Check’n In

Check in was swift. Straight from stepping foot out of the taxi and being greeted by the concierge we were ushered through the lobby to the club check-in. I immediately noticed to the left a striking piece of art behind a relaxed lounge area, which I presume would have been based off an old school Peranakan home.

The charming Peranakan theme is synonymously carried through in the hotel

Continuing our walk to the lifts with the cheerful concierge to the upstairs club level, the very understated look of black & white tiles combined with a very low ceiling of the foyer becomes directly contrasted as we venture further into the hotel. A large light-filled lobby lounge with grand white-washed colonial pillars while chandeliers adorn the ceilings, enhancing the lofts’ double-height.

A great place for afternoon tea or drink if I do say so.

The Room

We were staying in the premier suite, which boasts 52 sqm of classical living space. The suite (much like the entire hotel) has subtle touches of Peranakan charm. The bathroom was spacious and the living area blended heritage inspired pieces with modern day comforts.

The king size bed had a gorgeous bronzed-framed bed head with a exquisite padded silk design, that looked directly over the restored Bugis Junction Shopping district.

Food & Beverage

The hotel has an abundance of dining options, including 5 restaurants and bars ranging from Chinese, Japanese through to European. We ate at Ash & Elm, which you can read about (here).

Pool & Gym

The 24-hour fitness centre was quite spacious with a separate dedicated yoga/stretching room.

Above the fitness centre is a lovely outdoor pool and a pool bar with a good view of the surrounding city.

Pros:

  • Great location, with Bugis Junction literally at your doorstep
  • Lots of amenities

Cons:

  • Wifi very temperamental
  • Slightly an older demographic when we stayed (this could be a pro if you are 40+)
Bugis Junction

Overall:

The InterContinental Singapore is a lovely hotel with a nice touch of cultural charm to fit in with the modern day traveller.
