all things pearly whites

We sat down with Maria Lucas, the lady behind my pearly whites, and chatted all things pearly whites, hygiene, oral and gut health (and so much more!) Having been in the industry for 14 years, Maria is no stranger to dentistry, oral and general health. It is evident just by sitting in the chair with Maria looking after you, just how nurturing yet energising she is. Being an active member of the Dental Hygiene Association and the Australian Society of Periodontology she strives to provide the best possible care and attention to her clients.

KR: Maria, we love everything you represent. You truly radiate how leading a healthy lifestyle can benefit your oral and overall health. Not only do you have one of the best smiles out there, you are a beautiful person from the inside out. What are your top tips on keeping those pearly whites clean?

ML: Keeping your teeth clean all begins with the individual taking responsibility for their own mouth. I can’t stress that brushing your teeth twice a day (even better with a good quality electric brush) and flossing is essential. Yes, I said flossing and yes, I know people will always find an excuse but it is seriously one of the easiest things to do once you make it a habit. And of course, you should have a regular clean and check with your dentist and/or hygienist.

KR: Maria, your teeth are so white, do you drink coffee or red wine?

ML: Of course I do! I’m only human right? I actually drink a little too much coffee and what might shock you even more is that my favourite is a macchiato or a long black. As for red wine, I may drink a few glasses per week. Did I mention I love green smoothies too? Now they can stain!

KR: So how do you keep them so white?

ML: It’s all about maintenance. Just like fitness or a good skincare routine. I use custom made trays that I whiten my teeth rough 1-2 nights every 6-8 weeks or so. Or if I have something special coming up. The product I use is one that we distribute at the surgery, it’s a professional dentist only product. Obviously I am a little bias but, I want the best result.

KR: Tips for kids hygiene?

ML: Kids need to brush their teeth just as much as adults. I’m not as fussy with flossing on the littlies until they reach 11 or 12. However, I always encourage parents to help out, even take over for the last little bit. Kids will be kids, they miss stuff. We need to understand that and give them a helping hand.I also encourage all my patients to SPIT not RINSE after they have finished brushing with a fluoride toothpaste. The extra fluoride left in the mouth does wonders for any mouth and protection for the teeth.

KR: I’ve been reading that bad oral health in linked with other diseases in the body and pretty serious ones. Is this true?

MR: Absolutely! And probably one of my hottest topics that I could talk about for ages. What people need to understand is that the mouth and all the little blood vessels that are in there are connected to all our vital organs in our bodies. If we have decay or teeth that haven’t been professionally cleaned in a long time all that bacteria can spread to our vital organs. I could go on and on because I see serious problems every day that could have been avoided but I won’t scare you.

Moral of Story: Book your next check up and clean.

KR: Hmmm….Oil pulling? Do you have any experience with this?

ML: Oil pulling claims to whiten teeth but at this point there is no scientific evidence or studies that have concluded these results. I love coconut oil, I actually use it in so many of my meals and it’s great on hair and skin. But I won’t be using it as a substitute for my normal teeth whitening routine.

KR: Now, we have been seeing a lot of ‘at home’ whitening kits. While we know it is best to have this done by the professionals in particularly the zoom whitening, this can sometimes be quite expensive. What are some important things to look out for when deciding what kits are going to be the least harmful and most effective?

ML: That’s a really tricky question because there are so many products out their that just aren’t professional grade (even though they say they are!) One of the most important things is that the plastic tray inserted in the mouth is as custom to you as possible. Don’t let it sit over your gums because whitening material isn’t meant to be in contact with your gum and this is where we see a lot of disasters. Additionally, the whitening material should not be more than 16% peroxide if ordered online. Anymore, and you could be asking for trouble with a nasty burn.

Enhance The Most Natural You w/ Miss Franc

Miss Franc is one of Sydney’s leading boutique facial rejuvenation clinics located in Woollahra. I absolutely adore the team at Miss Franc, having become one of my ‘go to’ places for treatments, facials and skin rejuvenation. I sat down with Francine Ithier owner of Miss Franc, and spoke to her all about things beauty.

KR: Francine we absolutely love you! You have become one of the leading cosmetic specialists in Sydney, and my go to gal for my skin. Tell us about your journey in creating Miss Franc.

Miss Franc: Oh thank you!! First of all I decided to create my own business because I didn’t believe in a lot of anti-aging regimes and philosophies that are out there. I believe that anti-aging doesn’t just stop with a needle to the face; it goes way beyond what we can do with a needle. What people can do for themselves internally far out ways, what a simple jab can do externally. My philosophy came with my own experience and my own journey with my spiritual healer. She taught me to work with myself internally and to find out what works best for me, so with this in mind I have now put this into practice with a lot of my clients.

KR: You once said that “Beauty isn’t about vanity, it’s about confidence and self-esteem”, tell us a little bit more about what you mean here?

Miss Franc: Because when a woman looks great she feels great! It’s all self esteem. A little bit goes a long way, self esteem is both internal and external and if I can do my part helping a women look the best that she can externally, then my thought process is that self esteem will just come naturally.

Getting Pampered By Miss Franc Herself

KR: We love your holistic approach to enhancing the ‘most natural you’. What treatments do you offer?

Miss Franc: Hydrating and anti ageing facials with enzymes and herbs, all of my skin care is non toxic. It took me 12 months to find the perfect plant based skin care range, it suits my philosophy here at Miss Franc. I also offer a whole range of injectables to enhance your natural beauty. This ranges from lips, liquid face lifts, toxins in face and even underarms for excessive sweaters, the list goes on!

(Miss Franc**): I know this might sound a little strange coming from someone that loves the art of injecting, but I guess the holistic side of the clinic (hence why I call it beauty and balance) is because a lot of what I do is trying to treat the skin as natural as I can. Trying to educate my clients on the signs of ageing and what to do and not to do before just turning to toxins. Sometimes we get to the stage where we do need a little bit of enhancement but I love to have girls in here from their early 20’s, as they are the audience that is really listening and getting a hold on the holistic approach.

KR: A lot of our readers want to know the best & easiest skin care routine for before and after workouts along with before bedtime! What are you top tips on helping us keep fresh faced in these situations?

Miss Franc: Workout routine: This is a tough one! As a lot of girls in their 20’s tend to wear quite a lot of make up. If you are going to go to the gym with a full set of makeup you should either a) wash it off before your workout or b) have something to wash it off straight away after because sweat holds onto bacteria and it harbours around the face which may cause a break out and will clog your pores.

Morning & Night Routine: Always cleanse before bed, even if you don’t have makeup on, you collect a lot of dirt on your face over the duration of the day. Then, tone your face to neutralise your PH. A good serum started early really is advisable, a vitamin c brightening serum and then moisturise. Keep it simple! You don’t need to buy super expensive stuff (nor should you buy things from supermarkets) I like to use the rule of thumb that if you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on your face (in other words, stick to natural plant based ingredients)

KR: You have helped me understand what my skin needs, how can you help our readers?

Miss Franc: Best advice to young girls, do your research on ingredients & diet. Diet is extremely important, what you put in your body will result in what comes out on your face. Try and avoid sugar and stay hydrated.

KR: What should we do if we all of a sudden get break outs?

Miss Franc: Keep calm, eat clean, breakouts are primarily hormonal and diet related. Hygiene plays a big key once you see a nasty break out, wash your pillow cases regularly, clean hair & regular facials.

KR: Should we pop or not?

Miss Franc: Well! That is the magic question isn’t it? If you want to pop, my first recommendation is to go to a professional, however, if you want to do it at home, do it in a very sterile environment. If you have a nasty white head, get a sterile needle, take the head off by pricking just the tip; then extract it by pushing on the skin around it. Pimple creams do work by drying it out, if you get it early enough.

KR: Big no no’s for skin care?

Miss Franc: 1. Going to bed with makeup on. 2. Sunbathing for long periods of time in harsh sun. 3. Forgetting to exfoliate! No skin care product will penetrate skin if you don’t exfoliate.

If you are like me and don’t like carrying around your phone, wallet, and keys when you are running in and out of meetings, grocery shopping, errands, the gym or simply your morning walk, I may have just found the perfection solution!

Thanks to Optus and their new cashless innovations, you can get around from A to B with some nifty (and stylish) new gadgets.

Honestly (as always) I was a little skeptical about this whole concept. What if you get stuck buying coffee with just a wristband and for it to not work? How do you keep track of your spending? Surely the coffee cup can’t actually be scanned?

So, I took The Optus Pay Band and the SmartCup by Frank Green on the road to test them out.

First off, I needed to pick up some bits and pieces for the week, camera equipment, food styling goods, dog toys & fitness equipment. I wanted to set myself a limit of $250 for the day, knowing that I had to make every purchase under $100 (read more about that here).

So off I went, and I was actually very impressed! The seamless black design is not too offensive and fits in quite nicely with my monotone gym gear I normally rock. What was even more enjoyable than actually using the gadget, was watching the retailers expressions when I waved my wrist over the paywave machine.

How it works

Optus customers can simply download the Optus Pay app from iTunes or the Google play store.

  • Optus Pay accessories use NFC (near field communication) technology which allows them to communicate with Visa PayWave terminals and recognise your purchase (they have to be transactions under $100 in order for this to work.
  • Once registered load it with up to $500 from any Australian bank account and order your accessory using the app supplied free of charge.
  • Once the Optus Pay accessory is loaded and ready to go, Pay your way wherever you see Visa payWave, add up to 4 accessories per facility and easily manage them all through the Optus Pay app. Use the Visa Prepaid Debit card details in the app to pay online or by phone.

Overall

Overall, Optus has really revolutionised the cardless and cashless way of life. By using these nifty gadgets like the Pay Band & Smart Cup, we can now shop seamlessly without interfering and compensating for function over style. My favourite out of the 4 accessories has got to be the Pay Band. It is sleek and stylish and very lightweight which is perfect for when I want to go on a run and then grab a coffee. Or if you have a Fitbit or apple watch, you can slip the pay tag on the band and off you go.

Getting into the GoPro way of life

I have been using my little GoPro since my trip to Heron Island, and let me tell you, I am hooked! The perfect pocket size accessory that helps capture any experience.

The team at Lampoon Group invited me to the #GoProGirl event at Bondi Icebergs, to help with educating us and to capture that perfect shot or film.

I have the GoPro Silver Hero 4, with a variety of attachments (dog fetch mount being one of #thesausagebrothers favourite!)

I am honoured to be apart of such a great bunch of talented people, be it athletes, bloggers, photographers or just simply creative minds who make up the #GoPro family.
